Fuel Price Burden Sparks Public Anger: Left Parties Demand Immediate Rollback of Petrol and Diesel Hikes

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu: Assistant Chief Editor

Kadapa(AP) : Alleging that repeated increases in petrol and diesel prices are placing an unbearable burden on ordinary citizens, the CPM, CPI, and other Left-wing parties organized a large-scale road blockade protest on Tuesday across Andhra Pradesh. Protesters accused both the Central and State governments of contributing to rising living costs and demanded an immediate rollback of recent fuel price hikes. The agitation also highlighted broader concerns relating to inflation, transportation costs, agriculture, and the financial struggles of small traders and working-class families.

Massive road blockade draws public participation

The protest witnessed the participation of leaders and activists from various Left parties, along with a sizeable number of citizens. Demonstrators staged a sit-in on major roadways, raising slogans against rising fuel prices and calling upon governments to provide relief to consumers already facing increasing costs of living.

Protest leaders argued that fuel prices directly affect almost every sector of the economy, from transportation and agriculture to food prices and household expenses.

Protesters target centre and state over price hikes

Addressing the gathering, Left leaders criticized the Narendra Modi-led Central Government, alleging that fuel pricing policies have disproportionately benefited large corporate interests while increasing financial pressure on ordinary citizens.

They also criticized the State Government, alleging that additional taxes and levies have further increased fuel prices and intensified the burden on consumers. Protesters maintained that governments must prioritize public welfare over revenue generation.

Concerns over repeated fuel price increases

According to protest leaders, multiple fuel price revisions within a short period have adversely affected households, transport operators, farmers, small businesses, and daily wage earners.

They alleged that recent increases in petrol, diesel, and commercial LPG prices have created a cascading effect across the economy, contributing to higher costs for goods and services. Protesters further expressed concern over reports suggesting the possibility of future fuel price revisions.

Impact on farmers and small businesses

The demonstrators also linked rising fuel costs to challenges faced by the agricultural sector. They pointed to increasing input costs, including transportation and fertilizer expenses, at a time when farmers are preparing for the Kharif season.

Small traders and commercial establishments, they argued, are likewise struggling to absorb higher operating costs resulting from increased fuel and energy prices.

Why fuel prices matter to the public

Economists generally note that fuel prices influence transportation costs across the supply chain. Any increase in petrol or diesel rates can eventually affect the prices of food items, agricultural produce, manufactured goods, and essential services.

As a result, fuel pricing remains a matter of significant public interest, particularly for lower-income households, farmers, transport workers, and small business owners.

Protesters vow to continue agitation

Leaders participating in the agitation declared that they would continue their protests until meaningful relief is provided to consumers. They urged both the Central and State governments to review existing fuel pricing policies and take measures to reduce the burden on the public.

The road blockade concluded peacefully, but the protest reflected growing concerns over inflation and the economic pressures being experienced by many sections of society.
