New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has clarified that the recent circular issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) regarding FASTag transactions will not affect customer experience. Contrary to reports, FASTag users can continue recharging their accounts anytime before crossing a toll plaza without restrictions.
NPCI circular aims to resolve banking disputes
NHAI referred to Circular No. NPCI/2024-25/NETC/004A, dated January 28, 2025, issued by NPCI, stating that its purpose is to resolve disputes between Acquirer and Issuer Banks regarding FASTag status at toll plazas. “The objective is to ensure FASTag transactions are processed within a reasonable timeframe, preventing delays that could inconvenience users,” NHAI clarified.
National highways use real-time tag status
All toll plazas on national highways operate on the ICD 2.5 protocol, enabling real-time verification of FASTag status. This ensures that customers can recharge their FASTag wallets at any time before crossing a toll plaza without transaction issues.
However, some toll plazas on state highways still use the older ICD 2.4 protocol, which requires periodic updates. NHAI stated that efforts are underway to upgrade all such plazas to the ICD 2.5 protocol soon.

Encouragement for auto-recharge and digital payments
To avoid last-minute hassles, FASTag users are encouraged to link their accounts to UPI, current, or savings accounts with an auto-recharge option. Additionally, recharges can be made anytime through multiple payment channels, including UPI and net banking.
NHAI reassured customers that FASTag transactions remain seamless and urged them to rely on official updates rather than misleading reports.
