BJP’s Historic Victory in Delhi After 27 Years

Editorial

In a historic political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, reclaiming power in the capital after nearly three decades. The BJP won 48 out of 70 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had governed Delhi since 2015, secured 22 seats. The Indian National Congress failed to win any seats for the third consecutive time.

This victory marks a significant comeback for the BJP in Delhi, a region it last governed in 1998. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the win as a “resounding and historic mandate,” emphasizing Delhi’s status as a microcosm of India.

The election results have led to significant political developments. Atishi Marlena, who had been serving as the Chief Minister following Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation in September 2024, has stepped down from her position. In response, BJP leaders have met with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to discuss the formation of the new government and the appointment of the next Chief Minister.

The BJP’s campaign focused on appealing to middle-class voters, who constitute a significant portion of Delhi’s population. The party’s promises included tax breaks and subsidies aimed at this demographic. Analysts suggest that these strategies, along with a divided opposition, contributed to the BJP’s success.

The AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, faced significant challenges leading up to the election. Kejriwal’s arrest in March 2024 on corruption charges related to the Delhi liquor policy, followed by his resignation in September 2024, impacted the party’s standing. Atishi Marlena assumed the role of Chief Minister during this tumultuous period but was unable to lead the party to victory in the elections.

As the BJP prepares to form the new government, discussions are underway regarding the appointment of the next Chief Minister. The party’s leadership is expected to make an announcement soon, marking a new chapter in Delhi’s political landscape.
