Yemmiganur – Andhra Pradesh : Hundreds of construction workers gathered in Ymmiganur on Tuesday to protest against the government’s policies, which they allege are weakening the Building Welfare Board. The Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) organized the dharna in front of the Tehsildar’s office, demanding immediate action to address the severe difficulties faced by workers in the construction sector.

Workers’ struggle for survival

IFTU State Treasurer S Balaraju highlighted the plight of lakhs of workers struggling to make ends meet due to the scarcity of sand, a crucial material for construction. Despite the coalition government’s promise of free sand, workers are facing immense hardships, with sand unavailable even online.

Demands strict implementation of welfare measures

The protesters presented a memorandum to Ymmiganur Deputy Tehsildar Virendra, outlining their key demands. They urged the government to immediately implement the Building Welfare Board to provide necessary support and benefits to construction workers. Additionally, they demanded the cancellation of Circular 1214, which stops welfare schemes for workers. The protesters also sought free sand provision to workers in the construction sector, employment opportunities, and strict implementation of welfare schemes. Furthermore, they called for support and compensation for workers affected by accidents for the past five years.

A long-standing issue

The sand scarcity issue has been plaguing Andhra Pradesh for years, with reports of illegal sand mining and environmental degradation. The government’s inaction has led to severe consequences.

Unity and Solidarity

The protest saw participation from CPI (ML) New Democracy District eader M Satyanna, IFTU District leader Babu, Division Leaders Narendra, Raghu, Malleshappa, Nagaraju, Chandrasekhar, Jayaraju and other.

The collective effort emphasizes the importance of unity among workers and organizations in demanding justice and welfare.

The protest in Yemmiganur marks a significant step in the ongoing struggle for construction workers’ rights in Andhra Pradesh. IFTU urges the government to heed their demands and ensure a better future for these workers.
