Andhra Pradesh & Telangana: The Journalists’ Democratic Rights Forum (JDRF) has called on the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to address the pressing issues faced by journalists. In a letter penned by JDRF General Secretary Meda Srinivas, the group emphasized the urgent need for improved welfare, protection, and recognition of journalists, who play a critical role in upholding democracy.

Journalists’ safety and welfare ignored

In his letter addressed to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Meda Srinivas highlighted the lack of respect and support for journalists. He pointed out that the government’s failure to prioritize the safety of journalists has compromised social security, leading to fatal consequences for those exposing mafia activities. “Journalists are abandoning the profession due to lack of protection and welfare, and many families are struggling under these circumstances,” Srinivas lamented.

Demand for health and education benefits

The letter outlined several key demands for journalists, including the provision of free health cards to journalists and their families for medical treatment up to Rs 20 lakhs. Additionally, Srinivas urged the government to implement a 50% fee concession in private and corporate schools for the children of journalists with over five years of experience.

Call for free travel and legal protections

Srinivas further advocated for free toll plaza fees for journalists with more than five years of service, enhancing their travel convenience. He also called for a transparent inquiry process in cases where journalists are charged with illegal activities, suggesting that cases be overseen by a DSP/SDPO-level officer before being registered by the SHO.

Accreditation cards for experienced journalists

The JDRF also requested that journalists with over five years of experience be granted accreditation cards without delay. The letter emphasized that such cards would help journalists carry out their duties more effectively, ensuring access to events and officials without bureaucratic hurdles.

Urgent appeal to the Chief Ministers

Concluding the letter, Meda Srinivas appealed to the Chief Ministers of both Telugu states to take immediate steps to address these concerns. “The government must act swiftly to resolve the legal and welfare issues faced by journalists, ensuring justice is served and the profession safeguarded,” he stressed.
