Kolkata Man Recovers ₹60,000 Lost in Fake Electricity Bill Scam
After Swift Action by Cyber Cell

Kolkata-Durgapur : A resident of Kolkata narrowly escaped a major financial setback after falling victim to a cyber fraud involving a fake electricity disconnection call. In a remarkable example of prompt cyber policing, the Cyber Cell of Kolkata Police’s East Division successfully recovered the entire ₹60,000 lost by the victim and returned the amount after months of sustained investigation.
The incident once again highlights the growing threat posed by cyber criminals who impersonate officials from electricity departments, banks, and government agencies to scare innocent people into making urgent payments.
Fraudster Posed as Electricity Department Official
According to officials, the victim, who resides under the jurisdiction of Survey Park Police Station in Kolkata, received a phone call on December 11, 2025, from a person claiming to be an official from the electricity department.
The caller allegedly informed the victim that his electricity connection was about to be disconnected immediately because of unpaid dues. The fraudster used a threatening tone and pressured the victim to settle the payment without delay in order to avoid disruption of power supply.
Fearing inconvenience and believing the call to be genuine, the victim followed the instructions provided by the caller. He subsequently transferred ₹60,000 from his savings bank account to the account details shared by the fraudster.
Only later did the victim realize that he had been deceived by cyber criminals operating through a fake electricity bill scam.
Complaint Filed with Cyber Cell and NCRP
After understanding that he had become a victim of online fraud, the victim quickly approached the Cyber Cell of Kolkata Police’s East Division for assistance. Simultaneously, he also lodged a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), the government’s online platform dedicated to reporting cybercrime incidents.
Police officials said that timely reporting played a major role in helping investigators trace and recover the stolen money before it could completely disappear through multiple bank transfers.
Cybercrime experts often advise victims to report digital fraud immediately because fraudsters usually move stolen funds through several accounts within minutes in order to make tracing difficult.
Cyber Cell Conducted Detailed Investigation
Officials from Kolkata Police stated that the Cyber Cell initiated immediate action after receiving the complaint. Investigators tracked the financial trail, coordinated with banks and payment intermediaries, and monitored suspicious accounts linked to the fraud.
Through continuous follow-up and technical investigation, authorities managed to identify the transaction route used by the fraudsters. The investigation reportedly involved coordination with financial institutions and cyber monitoring systems to freeze the suspicious amount before it could be fully withdrawn.
After months of procedural verification and legal formalities, the recovered amount of ₹60,000 was finally returned to the victim on May 13, 2026.
Police described the recovery as a successful example of effective coordination between cyber investigators and banking institutions.
Victim Expressed Gratitude to Kolkata Police
Following the successful recovery of the money, the victim reportedly sent a letter of appreciation to the investigating team. In the letter shared later by Kolkata Police on social media platform X, the victim thanked the officers for their dedication, professionalism, and quick response.
The victim praised the Cyber Cell officials for their “swift action” and “tireless efforts” in ensuring that the hard-earned money was returned safely.
Kolkata Police also shared details of the successful recovery online to spread awareness among citizens about the increasing number of digital fraud cases involving impersonation tactics.
Growing Trend of Electricity Bill Cyber Scams
Cyber security experts say fake electricity disconnection scams have become increasingly common across India in recent years. Fraudsters typically contact victims through phone calls, SMS messages, or messaging applications while pretending to be representatives of electricity distribution companies.
In many cases, the fraudsters claim that a consumer’s electricity bill is overdue or that the power connection will be disconnected within hours unless payment is made immediately.
Victims are often asked to transfer money through digital payment applications, bank transfers, QR codes, or suspicious payment links. In some cases, fraudsters also trick victims into downloading remote access applications, giving criminals direct access to their mobile phones and banking information.
Authorities say cyber criminals deliberately create panic and urgency so that victims do not get enough time to verify the authenticity of the call.
Police Issued Public Advisory
Following the incident, Kolkata Police once again urged citizens to remain cautious while dealing with unsolicited calls related to utility services, banking, or government departments.
Police advised residents never to make payments based solely on verbal instructions received over phone calls or messages. Consumers were encouraged to directly contact official customer care numbers of electricity providers or visit official websites before responding to such demands.
Officials also warned people not to share confidential banking information such as OTPs, debit card details, CVV numbers, internet banking passwords, or UPI PINs with unknown callers.
The police further emphasized that genuine government departments and utility service providers generally do not threaten immediate disconnection through random calls demanding urgent digital payments.
Importance of Immediate Reporting
Cybercrime investigators stressed that victims of online fraud should report incidents immediately through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or nearby cyber police stations.
Quick reporting helps authorities freeze suspicious transactions at an early stage and improves the chances of recovering stolen funds.
Police also encouraged people to immediately contact their banks and block suspicious transactions if they suspect unauthorized activity in their accounts.
Experts believe public awareness remains one of the strongest tools in preventing cyber fraud, especially as criminals continue adopting more sophisticated social engineering tactics.
Rise in Digital Frauds Across India
India has witnessed a sharp rise in cyber fraud cases over the past few years due to increased use of online banking, UPI payments, and smartphone-based financial transactions.
Fraudsters now use various techniques including fake customer care calls, KYC update scams, loan frauds, investment scams, courier scams, fake police verification calls, and electricity bill frauds to target unsuspecting citizens.
Cyber criminals often operate from organized networks and use spoofed phone numbers, fake websites, and social engineering strategies to gain the trust of victims.
Law enforcement agencies across the country have intensified their cybercrime monitoring systems and awareness campaigns to tackle the growing menace.
Kolkata Police’s Continued Cyber Awareness Efforts
Kolkata Police has been actively conducting public awareness drives regarding cyber safety through social media campaigns, public advisories, and community outreach initiatives.
Officials regularly share examples of common fraud tactics to educate citizens about how cyber criminals manipulate fear, urgency, and confusion to steal money.
The successful recovery in the present case has once again demonstrated the importance of cyber vigilance, timely complaint registration, and coordinated investigation by law enforcement agencies.
Police officials reiterated that public cooperation and awareness are essential to effectively combat digital fraud and protect citizens from financial crimes in the digital age.
