Andhra Pradesh: On the occasion of World Malaria Day, Chittoor District health authorities conducted an awareness rally to educate the public about malaria prevention, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and community participation.
Rally highlights renewed commitment to end Malaria
District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Dr. DT Sudharani and District Malaria Officer Venugopal jointly led the rally on Friday, calling for renewed commitment, innovative strategies, and enthusiastic public participation in the fight against Malaria. Dr. Sudharani flagged off the rally, which featured ASHA workers chanting awareness slogans.
Understanding Malaria: Causes and symptoms
Speaking at the event, officials explained that malaria is transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant clean water. Dr. Venugopal outlined the four types of malaria, highlighting Plasmodium falciparum as the most dangerous. Symptoms include chills, headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and respiratory discomfort. Pregnant women and children are especially vulnerable to severe complications.
Preventive measures urged for all communities
Health officials stressed the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding grounds by preventing water stagnation around homes and maintaining proper sanitation. Observing ‘Friday Dry Day’, using mosquito nets, and promoting awareness were cited as key practices to prevent diseases such as Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Encephalitis, Typhoid, and the Zika virus.
Health teams participate in awareness campaign
The event saw active participation from UPHC staff and doctors including Dr. Anil Kumar, Dr. Praveena, Dr. Anusha, and Dr. Giri, who joined hands with ASHA workers and the public in taking a pledge to fight vector-borne diseases through collective action and consistent vigilance.
