India eyes 2036 Olympics: International Research Conference launched in Gujarat

Gujarat: The Union Minister of Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, inaugurated the first International Olympic Research Conference at Rashtriya Raksha University, focusing on bolstering India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics and advancing global research on sports and the Olympic ecosystem.
Inauguration highlights India’s Olympic ambitions
The four-day conference, a landmark event in South Asia, aims to position India as a key player in the global Olympic ecosystem. Over 60 research papers will be presented, with global experts and researchers contributing to discussions on strategic planning, financial sustainability, and collaborative networks essential for India’s Olympic goals.
In his speech, Dr. Mandaviya highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of hosting the Olympics in 2036, symbolizing India’s rising global stature. He emphasized the importance of research and innovation in achieving top rankings in sports by 2036 and beyond, stating, “Sports science and comprehensive Olympic research are vital to boosting India’s medal tally.”
Olympic research as a catalyst for progress
Dr. Mandaviya underscored the transformative role of sports in shaping a fit and prosperous nation, crediting initiatives like Khelo India and Fit India for fostering physical and mental fitness. He emphasized the need for a holistic approach to Olympic research, covering areas like youth development, social impact, and international perception.

Global perspectives and strategic planning
Dr. Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, conveyed a message advocating the integration of sports and education for youth development. A high-level panel discussion followed, featuring experts like Lambis Konstantinidis, Executive Director of Planning for Paris 2024 Olympics, who outlined key challenges and opportunities for India’s Olympic bid. He emphasized the importance of sustainability, technical planning, and crafting a compelling narrative for India’s readiness to host the Games.
Leadership and vision for 2036
Shri Harsh Sanghavi, Gujarat’s State Minister of Sports, highlighted the success of grassroots initiatives like Khel Mahakumbh and stressed the need to align sports with education. Vice Chancellor of Rashtriya Raksha University, Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N Patel, expressed pride in hosting the event, which he described as a turning point for India’s Olympic aspirations.
Keynote presentation and roadmap for success
Konstantinidis concluded the day with a keynote presentation, posing five critical questions for India’s Olympic strategy, including the Games’ legacy and India’s contributions to the Olympic movement. He stressed the importance of sustainable development and technical expertise in ensuring the success of India’s bid.
A milestone in India’s Olympic journey
Set to conclude on January 30, 2025, the conference is expected to leave a lasting impact on India’s Olympic aspirations by bringing together policymakers, academicians, and global experts to create an innovative and collaborative pathway toward the 2036 Olympics.
