Christian Scholar criticizes political influence in spiritual leadership

Hyderabad: Dr. LK Mrityunjaya, a renowned Christian Scholar, has issued a strong critique of the growing political influence over Christian community leadership, calling it a grave insult to the faith and its values. Speaking on Christmas, he urged believers to reflect on the true essence of their faith and resist the degradation of their spiritual identity.

“Is the Christian community an extension of political parties?”

Dr. Mrityunjaya questioned whether the Christian community has become an extension of political party offices. He lamented that the leadership within the community often changes with political tides, undermining the sanctity of the church, which Christ “bought with His blood” (Acts 20:28).

Loss of spiritual identity

He compared the situation to the sin of the Israelites in the wilderness, suggesting that modern Christians may have committed an even graver error by allowing external forces to dictate their spiritual path. “The head of the community has been cut off,” he warned, referring to the diminishing focus on Christ as the cornerstone of the faith (Ephesians 2:20).

“My house shall be called a house of prayer”

Quoting Jesus’ words, “They have made my temple a den of thieves” (Matthew 21:13), Dr. Mrityunjaya criticized the worldly domination infiltrating the church. He lamented the loss of the church’s identity as a sanctuary of holiness, instead becoming a stage for political maneuvering.

Call for revival and reflection

Dr. Mrityunjaya urged Christians to rediscover the teachings of Jesus, who “came to give life, and life abundantly” (John 10:10). He reminded them of their calling to be “the salt of the earth and the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14) and warned against compromising their divine mission for earthly gains.

A Christmas call for unity and spiritual renewal

Delivering his message on Christmas, Dr. Mrityunjaya called for serious introspection among Christians in the Telugu states. He emphasized the need to uphold the purity of their faith, resist political corruption, and honour Christ’s ultimate sacrifice. “Let us not forget the wisdom, holiness, and redemption granted through His grace,” he concluded.
