New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of two separate tragic incidents — one involving an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh and the other, a devastating fire at a government hospital in Rajasthan. The Commission has termed both incidents as serious violations of human rights and sought detailed reports from the respective state authorities.
Explosion claims seven lives in Andhra Pradesh
According to media reports, seven workers were killed and four others sustained critical injuries in an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit at Komaripalem village in Ambedkar Konaseema district on October 8, 2025. The owner of the unit also died in the incident.
The NHRC observed that the reported details raise grave concerns regarding safety violations and possible negligence. It has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, seeking a detailed report within two weeks, including the status of compensation to the victims’ families.
Preliminary police findings suggest that the explosion may have been caused by an error in mixing explosive materials. Twelve workers were reportedly inside the unit when the blast occurred, and the injured are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
Eight patients die in Jaipur hospital fire
In another tragic incident, eight patients lost their lives and three others were critically injured when a fire broke out in the trauma centre ICU of the Government-run Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur on October 6, 2025. The blaze and toxic smoke severely hampered rescue operations, with 18 patients reportedly present in the ICU and Semi-ICU wards at the time.
The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Rajasthan, calling for a comprehensive report within two weeks. The Commission has sought details on the cause of the fire, the accountability of hospital authorities, and the compensation provided to the next of kin of the deceased.
NHRC seeks accountability and safety measures
The Commission has emphasized that both incidents point to severe lapses in safety and human rights protection. It urged the state governments to take corrective steps to prevent recurrence of such tragedies and ensure that victims and their families receive timely relief and justice.
