Bangaluru: Union Power Minister Manohar Lal conducted a high-level review of Karnataka’s power sector in Bengaluru on Friday, commending the state’s renewable energy progress while urging reforms in financial management, smart metering, and infrastructure upgrades.
Renewable energy efforts appreciated
During the review meeting, attended by Union Minister of State Shripad Naik, Karnataka Energy Minister KJ George, and senior officials, Minister Manohar Lal applauded Karnataka’s growing contribution of renewable energy in its power mix. He said the visit aimed at identifying on-ground challenges and exploring innovative ways to strengthen the state’s energy systems.
Smart metering and digital payments key focus
The Minister emphasized accelerating the rollout of smart meters for commercial, industrial, and high-consumption users, calling for a time-bound execution plan. He directed the state to saturate prepaid smart meters in all government buildings and colonies by August 2025, including local bodies. He also stressed the need for a centralized payment mechanism** to streamline electricity dues from government departments.
Addressing financial losses and tariff issues
Manohar Lal urged Karnataka to reduce the financial losses of its power utilities by implementing cost-reflective tariffs and ensuring timely clearance of dues and subsidies. These steps, he said, are essential to maintaining the financial health of the power distribution companies (DISCOMs).
Transmission infrastructure and RoW bottlenecks
The meeting also discussed Right of Way (RoW) challenges affecting transmission expansion. The Union Minister advised the state to adopt the Centre’s compensation mechanism to resolve land acquisition and transmission line disputes quickly.
Centre reaffirms support for Karnataka’s power goals
Reiterating the central government’s commitment, Manohar Lal assured full support in Karnataka’s journey towards an efficient and future-ready power sector. He emphasized that collaborative efforts between the Centre and the State are essential to meet the growing energy demands and ensure the welfare of Karnataka’s people.
