Editorial

Ranchi:- Veteran tribal leader and founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Shibu Soren, popularly known as Dishom Guru, passed away on Monday at the age of 81. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Ranchi after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the political and social fabric of Jharkhand.

A towering figure in tribal politics, Soren played a key role in the creation of Jharkhand and spent his life fighting for the rights of indigenous communities. His death has sent shockwaves across the state and the nation, with political leaders, social activists, and citizens expressing deep sorrow.

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Shibu Soren’s son, Hemant Soren, shared a heartfelt message on social media:
“Today, I have lost everything. My father was not just a leader, he was my guide, my strength, and my biggest inspiration.”

Shibu Soren earned the title “Dishom Guru” — meaning leader of the people — for his relentless fight for tribal rights, land reforms, and justice for marginalized communities. He served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament and held ministerial positions at the national level, including as Union Coal Minister.

Prime Minister and other national leaders paid tribute to Soren, calling him a “champion of tribal rights” and a “symbol of grassroots movements.” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described him as “a voice of the voiceless and a true people’s leader.”

The state government has announced that Soren will be given a state funeral. His last rites will be performed on Wednesday in his ancestral village in Bokaro district.

With the passing of Shibu Soren, Jharkhand has lost not just a political icon, but a father figure whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
