Panaji: Acclaimed cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar, known for his stunning visual work in films like Magadheera, Eega, Baahubali, and RRR, captivated audiences during a session on “Integrating VFX with Cinematography” at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The discussion, moderated by filmmaker Shankar Ramakrishnan, explored Senthil’s creative journey and his approach to blending technology with traditional storytelling.

Revolutionizing visual storytelling through cinematography

Senthil Kumar has redefined cinematic visuals with his masterful use of colors, lighting, and camera techniques, bringing epic narratives to life. Whether it’s the grandeur of Baahubali or the electrifying action of RRR, his work has set new benchmarks in visual storytelling by seamlessly blending action, drama, and fantasy.

VFX and technology: Easing cinematic challenges

Senthil emphasized how VFX has transformed the filmmaking process, making it more dynamic and creative. “VFX has made the life of cinematographers easier, and AI-driven VFX is emerging as the future,” he noted, adding that embracing technology is essential for evolving as an artist.

Rather than resisting change, Senthil highlighted the need to integrate advancements into one’s work. “I don’t want to fight against technology. I want to integrate it with my works and evolve,” he said, emphasizing his philosophy of merging traditional cinematography with cutting-edge techniques.

The importance of pre-production and collaboration

Senthil credited meticulous planning and collaboration with the VFX team as crucial elements of his process. “Every story is unique. I take more time during pre-production to understand the story and its requirements,” he explained. He stressed the collaborative nature of filmmaking, where cinematographers and VFX directors must work together to create visuals that serve both narrative and technical demands.

Storytelling: Breaking rules and capturing imagination

Senthil rejected the notion of fixed rules in filmmaking, calling it a realm of creative choices. “There’s no rule in filmmaking. It’s all about how interestingly and convincingly you tell your story,” he said. He also advocated pushing creative boundaries to make larger-than-life stories resonate with audiences, even if it means breaking traditional logic.

From serendipity to mastery: A personal journey

Sharing a personal anecdote, Senthil revealed that his journey into cinematography began almost by chance when he joined a film school. However, it quickly became a passion, fueled by relentless dedication and a desire to innovate. Reflecting on his career, he said, “Many times, we have to break the logic and rules to board the story in a captivating manner.”

Senthil Kumar’s insights offered a rare glimpse into the mind of a pioneer who has redefined the art of visual storytelling, blending creativity and technology to deliver cinematic magic.
