By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu: Assistant Chief Editor

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that at least six persons from Kendrapara district of Odisha have been held captive by their employer near Bangkok, Thailand, for the past six months. Terming the allegations, if true, a serious violation of human rights, the Commission has sought a response from the Ministry of External Affairs within a week.

Workers allegedly confined, tortured

According to a news report dated February 19, 2026, the victims recorded a video on February 17 describing their ordeal. They reportedly claimed that they were confined inside a plywood factory, forced to work nearly 12 hours a day without salary or proper food, and subjected to both physical and mental torture.

The employer is also alleged to have confiscated their passports, restricting their movement and preventing their return.

Lured by promise of jobs

The report stated that the workers had travelled to Thailand in August last year through a labour contractor who allegedly promised them well-paying jobs with attractive salaries. Instead, they claim to have been trapped in exploitative working conditions.

NHRC seeks MEA intervention

Observing that the contents of the report raise grave concerns of human rights violations, the NHRC has sought comments from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on steps taken or proposed to assist the victims and their families.

The Commission has asked the Ministry to clarify whether support can be extended to facilitate the workers’ safe return to India. A response has been sought within one week.

Appeal for government assistance

In their recorded video, the workers reportedly appealed to Indian authorities to intervene and help them return home safely.

The Commission’s further course of action will depend on the response received from the Ministry of External Affairs.
