NHRC seeks report on Ashoka Professor’s arrest in Haryana

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported arrest and judicial remand of a professor from Ashoka University in Haryana, citing possible human rights and liberty violations.
Professor’s arrest raises rights concerns
The NHRC acted based on a news report dated 20th May, 2025, which briefly outlined the allegations that led to the professor’s arrest. The Commission observed that, at face value, the circumstances suggested a violation of the individual’s fundamental rights.
NHRC issues notice to Haryana Police Chief
In response, the NHRC has issued a formal notice to the Director General of Police, Haryana, demanding a detailed report on the matter. The Commission has set a one-week deadline for the submission of the report.
Commission takes suo motu cognizance
Highlighting the seriousness of the matter, the NHRC invoked its authority to take suo motu cognizance, a step it reserves for cases involving potential rights violations of significant concern.
