Dalit woman’s power meter removed, Mala Mahanadu demands reinstallation

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu: Assistant Chief Editor

Andhra Pradesh: Tension flared in West Godavari district after Mala Mahanadu State President Nanneti Pushparaj condemned the removal of a Dalit woman’s electricity meter without prior notice, calling the act discriminatory and warning of statewide protests if the issue is not resolved.

Unfair disconnection without notice sparks outrage

The controversy centers around Dolla Vijaya Lakshmi, a resident of Dollavari Peta in Yelamanchili Mandal’s Kanakayyalanka Panchayat. According to Nanneti Pushparaj, the electricity meter—installed legally with Panchayat Secretary’s approval on July 4—was abruptly removed by authorities without any prior intimation.

He termed the removal “cruel and unjust,” particularly in light of the fact that the woman belongs to the Dalit community. “Such acts reflect a deep-rooted discriminatory attitude within the system,” he said.

Call for immediate reinstallation

Pushparaj demanded that the electricity department reinstall the meter at the exact spot where it was removed. “If this injustice is not corrected, Mala Mahanadu will organize statewide protests to defend the dignity and rights of Dalits,” he warned.

Several leaders from employee unions and Dalit organizations stood in solidarity with the victim. Among those present were Netala Salmon Raju, Pinipe Peddi Raju, Gootam Venkateswara Rao, Nageswara Rao, Sarella Raju, Gudise Srinu, Paidi Venkatesh, Sarella Teja, and Pinipe Praveen. They expressed concern over increasing instances of administrative high-handedness against Dalit families.

This incident raises serious questions about procedural justice and caste sensitivity in grassroots administration. As tensions simmer, local authorities must act swiftly to rectify the situation and prevent further unrest.
