Government removes onion export duty to ensure better pices for farmers

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu: Assistant Chief Editor

New Delhi: Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the central government has completely removed the 20% export duty on onions to protect farmers from falling prices. He emphasized that the Modi government remains committed to ensuring remunerative prices for farmers.

Reversal of export duty to stabilize prices

Previously, a 40% export duty was imposed on onions, but as prices declined and farmers struggled to receive fair compensation, the government initially reduced it to 20%. Now, the duty has been fully eliminated, allowing onion exports to global markets without additional costs.

Government’s commitment to farmer welfare

Chouhan reiterated that the decision aligns with the government’s pro-farmer stance, ensuring that their produce can be sold internationally at better prices. By removing the export levy, the government aims to boost farmers’ incomes and support agricultural exports.
