NHRC concludes online internship, urges youth to champion human rights

New Delhi: The two-week online short-term internship program organized by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, concluded on Friday, providing 70 students from across the country with insights into human rights and their practical applications.

Youth empowered with human rights knowledge

The program, which began on January 27, 2025, brought together students from diverse universities, including those from remote areas, to engage in discussions and activities focused on human rights education.

Secretary General’s call for action

NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal, in his valedictory address, congratulated the interns and encouraged them to apply their knowledge for meaningful societal contributions. He emphasized that India’s hard-fought freedom and constitutional rights must be utilized to ensure dignity, ease of living, and socio-economic inclusion for all.

Importance of empathy and sensitivity

Lal urged the students to internalize values of empathy and sensitivity, stressing that opportunities to help others must not be lost. He highlighted the need for improved public spaces, access to education, and protection of marginalized communities’ rights.

Insights into human rights institutions

Lt Col Virender Singh, Director, NHRC, India, presented the internship report, detailing sessions conducted by NHRC officials, experts, and civil society representatives. Virtual tours to Tihar Jail and Asha Kiran Shelter Home provided interns with a first-hand understanding of institutional mechanisms and the challenges faced by vulnerable groups.

Recognizing outstanding participants

The event concluded with the announcement of winners for various competitions, including book reviews, research project presentations, and declamation contests, acknowledging the efforts of interns in engaging with human rights discourse.

The NHRC continues its commitment to nurturing young minds, equipping them with the tools to advocate for justice and equality in society.
