Court slashes Bar Council election deposit, lawyers hail ALA victory

Andhra Pradesh: In a significant relief to lawyer candidates across Andhra Pradesh, the High Court on Monday reduced the Bar Council election deposit amount, following a legal challenge led by senior advocate MV Rajaram on behalf of the Andhra Lawyers Association (ALA).
Challenge to election deposit rule
Senior advocate MV Rajaram challenged the condition requiring lawyer candidates to pay a Rs 1.25 lakh deposit to contest Bar Council elections, terming it an attempt to silence questioning voices within the legal fraternity.
Favourable court verdict
In case No. 29216/2025, the court ruled in favour of the petitioners and reduced the deposit amount to Rs 50,000, marking a major victory for lawyers’ rights and democratic participation.
Statewide appreciation
Lawyers from all districts congratulated Rajaram, including advocates DVV Trinadh, P Bhagyarani, AVL Narasimha Rao, Dadi Mamata Varma, Jagannadha Surya Prabhavati, ON Krishna, Avadhanula Hari, Alla Srihari, Udum Swathi, Mallikharjuna Rao, Katta Pratap Kumar, Bonda Venkata Subrahmanyeswara Rao, Manoj and others.
Call for support
ALA General Secretary Meda Srinivas termed the verdict a victory for all lawyers and appealed to advocates statewide to support Rajaram’s candidature, citing his commitment to lawyers’ welfare, security and development.
