New Delhi: Indian Railways’ One Station One Product (OSOP) initiative has emerged as a transformative platform for promoting local craftsmanship and grassroots entrepreneurship, turning railway stations into vibrant hubs of regional culture and economic activity, a reporter learns.

Stations as platforms for local livelihoods

Launched in 2022, the OSOP scheme aims to provide a direct marketing platform for local artisans, weavers, craftsmen, and small producers by setting up dedicated retail outlets at railway stations. By connecting local heritage with India’s vast railway network, the initiative brings regional products directly to millions of passengers every day.

Wide reach across the railway network

As of January 19, 2026, OSOP outlets have been established at 2,002 railway stations across the country, with a total of 2,326 outlets currently operational. These outlets have become a steady source of income for thousands of small producers, helping them reach a national audience without intermediaries.

Boost to grassroots entrepreneurship

According to official data, the OSOP initiative has created direct economic opportunities for over 1.32 lakh beneficiaries since its inception. The scheme has significantly strengthened grassroots entrepreneurship by enabling local producers to showcase and sell their products in high-footfall public spaces.

Reviving traditional crafts and regional specialties

Beyond economic numbers, OSOP is playing a key role in reviving traditional crafts and regional specialties that were gradually losing prominence. From bamboo products and handmade pottery in the Northeast to handlooms, spices, pickles, and local sweets in other regions, each outlet reflects the unique identity of its area.

Vocal for local in action

By integrating commerce with culture, Indian Railways has successfully transformed railway stations into centers of local enterprise. The OSOP scheme stands as a strong example of the “Vocal for Local” vision, empowering communities, preserving traditional skills, and enriching the travel experience for passengers across the nation.
