INSIGHT Brings New Hope to Mahatma Gandhi Leprosy Colony in Dhanbad

Editorial

Nirsa, Dhanbad:- Indian Socio Income and Grievance Helping Trust (INSIGHT), in collaboration with Esther Prayer Fellowship, Bangalore (Karnataka), organized a social assistance program at the Mahatma Gandhi Leprosy Colony in Nirsa, Dhanbad. This colony was established for people who were once affected by leprosy. Although they are now completely cured, they still struggle to find employment and receive no government assistance.

According to reports, when these individuals were suffering from leprosy, they used to receive support from the government. However, after recovery, all forms of assistance were discontinued. Many of them belong to different states across India and were ostracized by their families and society. Later, the government allotted them a place to live, which came to be known as the “Mahatma Gandhi Leprosy Colony.”

Due to social discrimination and exclusion, these people are still not accepted by mainstream society. As a result, they are forced to survive by begging. Furthermore, the colony lacks basic facilities such as drinking water and electricity, making their lives even more difficult.

This initiative was led by Subhash Singh, Secretary of the Trust, and . Sarita Singh, General Secretary. Their goal is to work toward the rehabilitation, dignity, and self-reliance of these marginalized individuals.

During the event, INSIGHT Trust distributed fruits, clothes to widowed women, and some financial assistance to the residents of the colony. This act symbolized compassion and empathy for those who have long been neglected by society.

The Trust also listened to the grievances of the residents and assured them that efforts would be made to connect them with employment opportunities and relevant government welfare schemes.

This social initiative stands as an inspiring example not only for Jharkhand but for the entire nation — demonstrating how compassion and cooperation can bring real change to the lives of the marginalized.
